teachersince 1991 i have taught in the School of Art+Design at the University of Illinois. prior to that i taught for roughly six years in the San Francisco Bay Area, including San Jose State University, California College of Arts, and San Francisco City College. due to my interest in the interplay of words and images, visual literacy, and the influence of technology on literacy in general, i hold a joint appointment in English and am part of the Core Faculty in the Center for Writing Studies. below, i highlight two of my most satisfying accomplishments as an educator. my pdf vita contains a complete teaching record.

Writing with Video :: 2005 - present
developed as an Advanced Composition course, it engages students in a comprehensive exploration of video as a rhetorical narrative medium, with emphasis on the actual production of video work. Directed writing is integrated into all aspects of the production process — brainstorming and conceptualization, drafting and storyboarding, revision, and critique. Writing is positioned as an integral part of the process of thinking, problem solving, and creating. developed in collaboration with maria lovett. i currently mentor six Teaching Assistants who teach the undergraduate sections, while i teach the graduate course. as part of the course, students are given an Apple laptop for the duration of the semester. all coursework -- both video and writing -- is published in blog format.Narrative Media Program :: 2000 - present
co-founded, with nan goggin, a new graduate program dedicated to exploring new technologies, new audiences, and new venues as they relate to contemporary art practice. in 2007 the Narrative Media Program evolved into the New Media program and also began to offer undergraduate courses leading to a BFA. in addition to co-founding the program, i have also served as program chair.awards
